On the 18th July 2009, which was a year after the Fountain was restored, a celebration was held to mark the event.  Organised by the Boulevard Neighbourhood Watch there were competitions, arts and crafts , vegetable growing competitions , a dog show and various band. The Hessle Road Network provided the Hall for teas and Coffees and as a space for the competitions. The Hessle Road Network also provided Youth Workers to help make sure the day ran smoothly.

Hessle Road Pram Race and Carnival – 2009

The photo’s below are of the Hessle Road Pram Race and Carnival on the 5th September 2009.  This was the first time the race had been run since the 1980’s.  The race was resurrected at the request of Peter Nicholson and Tony Horncastle and after months of hard work by a number of agencies the day went ahead and proved to be a huge success.

The event was organised by Kim Hepple (Community Participation Officer – Riverside Area Team).  Kim was assisted by Hessle Road Network who helped to organise the Carnival and the youth workers also supported the event by helping out as marshals at the race.  Others involved in the Pram Race Committee were Tony Horncastle, Peter Nicholson, Gateway, Community Wardens, Community Representatives and Business Representatives.

The races were run for an hour in the afternoon with over 1,000 spectators lining the route with 17 teams entered in 4 heats.  The winners of the heats were Hessle Road Network, Blue Orchid, ASDA and Halfway Café with the overall winners being the team from ASDA.

After the race was finished spectators moved on to the Carnival which was held on Massey Street Fields.    The Carnival had something for everyone especially young people with Children’s rides, bouncy castles, arts & crafts with Scrapstore, football with Grassroots and rugby sumo suits with Hull FC.  Young people from Hessle Road Network were keen to be involved in the event and a group of young women from Endeavour School who are part of our Alternative Learning Programme spent the afternoon face painting.  Two young men from one of the evening sessions set up a stall selling sweets and crisps and another group set up an activity which involved throwing wet sponges at one particular youth worker!

The Carnival went on from about 2pm until 6pm and one of the most popular attractions was on the stage.  Dave Okeweisia organised a number of acts to perform including break dancers, Sambalada Band, Projekt Feenix and Paul Nzayadio.  A number of organisations also came along with stalls offering information and raising money for a variety of causes.

All in all the day was a huge success and although everyone involved in the organising went away exhausted by the long day everyone agreed that this had been a great event which brought together the whole community. All of the money raised will be used for the benefit of young people in the Newington and St Andrews area.  The day went so well the committee are continuing to meet as we are planning to hold the event again on the 18th September 2010 and make it even bigger and better!
