Hessle Road Network – Overview

Hessle Road Network is a community-led organisation that was formed to enable local residents to actively participate in regeneration issues in their area – particularly those addressing the needs of young people.

The project is based in the Hessle Road area of Hull, an urban location less than two miles from Hull City centre. Hessle Road covers part of two local authority wards, Newington and St. Andrews, and is a key secondary shopping location. Newington and St. Andrews are characterised by severe levels of urban deprivation.

Hessle Road Network is a company limited by guarantee with charitable status. Its Board of Directors all live in the local community and many are active in other community organisations in the area.  Hessle Road Network is a genuinely community run, community focussed set-up involved in the direct delivery of service to its customers (the local community) on a daily basis.

Hessle Road Network has a full staff complement of 16, plus a youth apprentice, a young person on an administration placement plus volunteers who assist the project and some Sessional Workers supporting the Youth Project.

The Network currently has two areas of activity – the Youth Project and the Health and Social Care Project.

The main office is based within Hull Play Resource Centre (Scrapstore) on Dairycoates Avenue. Included in the facility is one large room set aside more or less exclusively for the Youth Project.

Hessle Road Network also leases St. Wilfrid’s Church Hall on the Boulevard (a short distance from its main office), which serves as the base and venue for the activities of the Health and Social Care Project.  The Network is now also leasing 223 Beverley Road which is being used to run an Alternative Learning Provision on behalf of the West Hull Inclusion Partnership.
